Wrington Greens
What we believe in
Large-scale vegetable production is all about high productivity and profit. Sadly, maintaining profits requires chemicals and non-organic pesticides to keep yields high – affecting flavour, freshness and diversity. Then there are the huge resources used to pick, pack and transport produce to customers. We all know growing and delivering produce this way is environmentally damaging, commercially irresponsible and economically unsustainable.
Obviously at Wrington Greens we have to turn a profit like every business, but it doesn’t have to be at the expense of the environment. So as well as following the Soil Association’s rigorously high standards, we’re doing all we can to get you a diverse range of fresh and flavoursome produce while leaving as light a carbon footprint as possible. Here’s how:
- We only supply local customers to keep food miles as low as possible.
- We don’t use unnecessary or wasteful packaging, and what we do use is biodegradable.
- By year’s end all our vehicles, including the farm tractor, will run on 100% biofuel. <-->
- If we have to use plastic mulch around the plants, we only use vegetable-based biodegradable sheeting that we simply plough back into the field.
- Our onsite loo is self-composting so there’s no need for a septic tank. Come and try it some time!
But this is just the start. We’ll continue to look at other ways to reduce our carbon emissions – any ideas, please let us know.
With Wrington Greens you can enjoy fantastically fresh and tasty produce knowing exactly where its come from – and that picking, packing and transporting it to you has had minimal impact on the environment. There you go – even greener greens!
